Self-made foodwraps are sustainable and reusable. Whether you want to cover your bowl of Overnight Oats in the fridge or bring your favorite Verival snacks with you, the beeswax foodwrap adopts to any kind of shape, as it can be simply mold by using the warmth of your hands. It can be washed with lukewarm water and soap and is usable for over a year. For all of you who are in love with the idea but are just not into the whole DIY thing, you can also buy readymade foodwraps. For example, from the Austrian company Jaus’n Wrap.
What you need:
- thin cotton fabric, size as desired (use for example old curtains, bedsheets or cloths)
- jojoba oil
- vegetable grater
- backing tray
- backing parchment
- Cut the fabric into the desired size and shape. We made 20x20cm squares.
- Line the backing tray with the backing parchment and grate the beeswax with the vegetable grater.
- Put the fabric on the backing parchment and evenly apply drops of the jojoba oil all over it. Now spread out the grated beeswax all over the fabric.
4. To melt the beeswax put the baking tray for 5 minutes into an oven at 95° Use the brush to evenly spread out the beeswax so it covers all the fabric, especially paying attention to the edges. Put the tray back into the oven for another 2-3 minutes
5. To let the wrap cool it’s best to gently remove it from the baking parchment and hold it up with your hands for a few seconds until it’s dry. That’s it!
Tip: if your foodwrap starts to get brittle after a while or the wax hasn’t been spread out well enough whilst making it, you can repeatedly apply more beeswax and put it back into the oven to fix it.
