Finding vegetarian food can be hard when visiting Tokyo, not only for lunch and dinner, but also for breakfast. At least hat’s what our colleague Annalena has experienced herself on her recent trip to Japan. As described on the blog japanliebe (= German vor “Japan love”), the traditional Japanese breakfast includes rice, miso soup, pickles (especially gherkin and radish) and grilled fish. As miso soup in Japan is mostly not vegetarian either (because it’s originally made with fish stock), there wouldn’t be that much left to choose from. But also meat and fish eaters might find it hard to get used to this kind of breakfast. 😉

Our breakfast place recommendation for Tokyo is therefore not only for the vegetarians amongst you, but also for all of those, who – as much as they love the Japanese cuisine – would like to start at least one day of their trip with Western breakfast in their bellies. Besides, this kind of breakfast seems to be very well received by the Japanese too, as most of the restaurant visitors are no tourists, but locals.

Sarabeth‘s

The Sarabeth’s is a chain store originating from New York and can be found three times in Tokyo.  One is close to Tokyo Station, another is located in the Lumine Center at Shinjuku Station and the third can be found in the district Shinagawa.

Praised as „The Breakfast Queen of New York“ by the New York Magazine, the Sarabeth’s offers everything you could possibly desire for breakfast. Egg dishes like Eggs Benedict or omelette, variations of fluffy french toast and pancakes as well as hearty sandwiches… As you probably imagine, it’s hard to decide what to get! However, the spinach-eggwhite-omelette with goat cheese and the french toast filled with peanut butter (!) and served with fresh berries are highly recommendable.

If you (like us) would like to try more dishes from the menu, feel free to share with your friends. The Japanese are very courteous and enjoy fulfilling all of their guests’ wishes.

Just a final, little hint: Everyone who doesn’t like to wait 20 minutes for a free seat, should consider booking a table in advance, also on weekdays.
